I just bought a new external Seagate hard drive. It has USB 2 interface. Even though it requires XP and Vista, it works on My Win2000 PC which has USB1. Aside from the obvious slow transfer, am I putting an additional stress on the external HD? I have already transferred some 15 GB of data.

Is it bad? I think so.
Like downloading a 5GB file with a 2400 baud phone modem. It may work but there is lots of potential for corrupted transfers. File verify will double the time.

Why not buy a USB2 card?

Actually, no, that's not all. I've seen USB2 drives corrupt themselves on a USB1 connection.

Should it be a problem?... No.

Could it be a problem? Running Windows?! Older Windows?!?
