The service plans or extended warranties are only for 2-4 years. It's not a life promise or anything.

And how many items of modern electronic equipment break down in 2-4 years? If they are going to break it happens in the first few days or in years. Extended warranties are regarded by the retailer as a way of increasing their profits and by the insurance company providing the cover as pure profit. Very few people claim and of many that do, they will find a way out of paying out.

hd warranty is 5 years for seagate and 3 years for WD so no need for extended warranty..check the philips dvp-5982 dvd player with usb.it work best with 3.5 hard drives because of the external power source.most of the external hd based on the 2.5" don't.I have the WD passport 250gb and it doesn't work .

I don't think the manufacture warranty covers hard drive recovery. The service plan is actually pretty cheap and they can recover your hard drive that day within minutes, and it's free. It can get pricey when you talk about recovering a hard drive. In most cases, you can buy a new hard drive for the price of recovering your old one. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
MJA, my external hard drive is WD Essential 2.0 320GB. I plan on getting the 750GB this week, since it's on sale. -
ya I saw the Seagate one for $159
