I did notice that the headers in AVI 1.0 files created by AviDemux and VirtualDub are a little different. The differences should have been parsable by a properly written program but maybe your player makes assumptions about the location or size of certain fields.
If you want to see the differences for yourself you can use the Hex editor in VirtualDub along with its RIFF chunk tree viewer.
