  1. Ok, so i want to convert 4 dvds (single vob files on HD) to avi, so ive been using AutoGK, but size isnt a huge problem.. 700mb is fine, as is 1.4gb, but which is faster to encode to?
what options would be best to reduce the encoding time? as long as the quality is reasonable, i dont much care and hard drive space isnt an issue, but atm, converting is taking upwards of 4 to 6 hours per dvd, (P4 3.06ghz, 2gb RAM) which seems kind of ridiculous, no?
if thats a normal time.. then.. ill have to deal with it.. but id rather not

Tell AutoGK to use Target Quality. If you use one of the "size" options, it has to use a two-pass encode to get the correct file size. In "quality" mode it only runs one pass. The default settings (75% for xvid, 60% for divx) work pretty good.

It won't quite cut the encoding time in half, since in addition to encoding it has to index the file and maybe convert the audio, but it should cut the total time by maybe 40%. Of course the file size will be unpredictable.

Rather odd. I've been doing the same thing lately, but my conversion times are only running about 2-2 1/2 hours. This is on an AMD dual core (2.0ghz). I've been converting the audio to mp3 and using the 1.4GB (2 cd) mode.

From what I've seen so far, using the single cd (700MB) option is slower than the 2 cd (1.4GB) option.
