Hey guys, i did a search here on how to convert divx3 to divx5 but found nothing.

    Here is my sitaution-

I have about 80+ video files with DIVX3 codec that i need to update to DIVX5. Reason being is that i just got a 360 elite, and it supports divx and wmv playback. So is there any easier way to convert from divx3 to divx5 other then using apps like tmpgenc, or even divx's own converter. This will take forever having to convert 80+ videos.

Thanks for any and all input!

AutoGK or AVI Recomp are pretty easy to use but reconverting will take time. It might be enough to just update the avi fourcc to div4 using AVI FourCC Code Changer.

  3. I found this modded version of ffmpeg on Doom9 that converts from Divx3 to Divx5 losslessly and is much faster than re-encoding (the file is linked about halfway down the page).

    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=85229&page=2

I've used it for over a year and it works great.

I modified the example batch file shown near the top of the page to use DivXMux to mux the files back together. I haven't yet experienced any AV sync issues with the converted videos.

Vid-Kid - i downloaded the modded version of ffmpeg. but when i run the .exe, it opens up a command window, and then a bunch of text scrolls, and then the window closes. so i assume i have to run this through the CMD command, but ive never done anything like this so im not sure how to use this program, and i cant find any tutorials online of how to use it.

Did you actually read the post at doom9 ? It has an example and suggestions. You have to do some reading first before it all becomes clear.

No. You do have to make sure you are in the same folder as ffmpeg though, or have a full path name in your commands.

Personally, I think you would be better off with AVI Recomp

I hate to state the obvious, but are you sure you HAVE to convert from Divx3? I have heard of players that won't play Divx3, but some will. My Philips DVP-642, hardly top of the line, will play them fine.

You also should realize that Divx3 was all we had at the time, but it did a pretty poor job overall. The quality was never all that good with Divx3 and your conversions to Divx5 are just going to make matters worse. You may or may not care/notice, but there will absolutely be some quality loss in this conversion, possibly quite noticeable.

If you're willing to buy the commercial Divx codec (http://www.divx.com), the free Dr. Divx encoder which uses it is very easy to use and offers enough features to satisfy most people. It can do batch encoding, which might simplify your life a little. Again, it is NOT free, so if the idea of spending $18.99 doesn't appeal to you, you'll have to use the other solutions suggested, which might take a lot more time. You can get Dr. Divx for free at http://www.drdivx.com but please note as I said that it ONLY works with the commercial Divx codec.

  9. OK, first of all, please note that this is just something that I threw together for my own use. Don't expect any fancy interface or anything. It is simple, but it suits my needs.

To make it a bit easier for you, I have zipped up the files that I use. You can download it here

    http://www.divshare.com/download/3920041-61c

    1. Unzip the files to a directory of your choice.

    2. Copy an AVI that you want to convert from Divx3 to Divx5 to the directory and rename it to MOVIE.AVI

    3. Double click on the file Convert_Divx32MP4_NAC.bat, which will transcode the video to Divx5, demux the audio unchanged to an MP3 file, and then re-mux the audio and transcoded video back together.

    4. After the command window finally disappears, you should see a file in the directory called MOVIE_OUTPUT_MUXED.AVI. That is the finished file, so you can rename it to whatever you want. The original MOVIE.AVI file will still be in the directory.

You will also see a second batch file in the directory called Convert_Divx32MP4.bat. That requires a bit more explanation. I have a number of old music videos that were encoded as Divx3 with MP3 audio that have a variety of bitrates. Some of the audio was recorded at very low volumes. I play all my videos via my D-Link DSM-320 media player, which doesn't support Divx3 and some of the MP3 bitrates that I have found in the videos. Also, I hate having to turn the volume up and down on my TV because the audio in the AVIs are all over map.

To fix the audio, I extract to audio to WAV format, maximize the volume, and convert it back to MP3 at a bitrate that my media player likes. The Convert_Divx32MP4.bat file handles the audio conversion as well as the video transcoding. To use it, you will also need to install Avisynth, which I use to decode the audio to WAV. The steps to use Convert_Divx32MP4.bat are the same as those for Convert_Divx32MP4_NAC.bat above.

    Hope this helps.

I believe Dr. Divx can be used with the free divX codec, jman, because that's what I've been using for a couple days now and I never paid anything. I think some options are disabled, however. The "insane" setting and bitrates higher than 4000, or at least those options don't appear to be available to me. Don't need them (at least not yet) so it isn't a problem.

  14. My thanks ALSO to Vid-Kid. Tried the batch files and it did the conversions in a fast and painless way.

Only slight problem with the converted files. Opening in PowerDVD takes bit of time. But plays easily in the standalones.
