Hello. I am looking for a free, demo, or shareware program to transfer files and crap from my old computer to my brand new one. I would like a program that uses the NICs in my computers because I have the cable already. I found a couple that use the printer serial ports. Also, I can't use firewire because on the new one has firewire. Thanks.

  2. What OS's are on the box's ???
I would just set up the printer and file sharing ability of windows.
I have to assume you aren't asking about linux or you would never have asked the question.

to set up the file sharing you just need to ensure your nic's are installed properly and right click on network neighborhood. then properties. make sure both computers are on the same network. then start printer and file sharing services. and reboot. then go into "my computer" and right click a drive and tell it to share this device. name it and ok.

then you just look for that computer from your other machine and start moving stuff.
    that should get you rolling.
if not get me on aol and i can get really specific. (at work right now no windows machines available to look at)
    aol name is grouchytim
    good luck

I should have been more specific. I am going from a Win98 to WinXP. I will try that when I get home this evening. It sounds easy enough, but with my luck. I order a machine for a company (I am not telling which one because of the slaggin I would get) and paid extra for the 2 day delivery. Some moron at FedEx put a sticker on the address so the printer arrived, but not the computer. Had to drive out of my way by 45 minutes to pick it up or wait until the next day. Then I got it home and no freggin' speakers! Had to call up and get those sent to me...Just a bunch of crap that I didn't want on my New Computer Day.

Okay, I tried this out, but am having trouble. I did the thing where I set up the sharing on the old hard drive, named it, rebooted it, and both computers have the Client for Microsoft Networks. I use a cable modem so when I start up the new computer with Windows XP it just says my connection is not connected and I see nothing anywhere about the other computer or it's hard drive. I don't have AOL or do AIM so I figured you might look back at my progress. I did not set up file sharing on the new XP machine or route any connection or anything. Any additional help would be much appreciated.

  5. On your old computer, go to my computer right click the drive or drives you want to move your files from and click Properties.
You'll see a "sharing" tab.....that should all be self explanatory.

Now move over to your new computer and go to the network neighbourhood. I'm not sure if this is the same as in win98 but we assume it is (it should be on your desktop). Provided you have setup your network correctly you'll see 2 computers....the WinXP computer and your old win98 computer. You HAVE TO share something or it won't work :)

Doubleclick on the win98 computer and you'll see whatever you just shared.
    I.E. if you have shared drives C: and D: you'll see a folder c and a folder d.
From here it pretty much works like moving and copying files as you would on a single computer.
Again this all assumes you have already setup a working network. More help on networking is available at http://www.wown.com
If you need anymore help let me know :)
