I'm using Vista32 Ultimate with basic vista color. The taskbar color is black which makes it hard to see the symbols.
Is there any way to change it to another color without upsetting any of the other colors?

I'm not sure you can change just the taskbar. but for the option, you can experiment with the following:
Right-click on the Desktop, and select Personalize. In the window that pops up, select 'Window Color and Appearance.' You'll be able to select from a small range of colors for your window borders and taskbar to be (or pick a different color with the mixer), change the window transparency, etc.If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -

Seems like a nightmare but you get the results you want, apparently.
