The reason your computer freezes up during playback can be a few reasons, bad ram,cpu heating up,virus, system files conflicting, usually its bad ram and overheating as the first suspects cause you are pushing your computer when the freeze up happens.Might be bad burns freezing up at that point.

Can be any of the reasons i posted, file conflicts can be codecs and video drivers and audio drivers. You have to narrow down where the problem is,test the discs in a dvd player.

First 3 questions should be :
A: Dose this effect happen when playing other types of video ?
Example : Ripped dvd files from hard drive (not rared or from iso)
B: Dose this effect occur with other players ?
C: Dose this also appear when playing audio formats ?
From here you might actually get an answer that pinpoints the problem.
First suggestion is to check for updated drivers package for the gpu, and try again.
In some case's, you may need to roll back to an earlier release of the video drivers.
Sounds more like an issue caused by hard drive, it would be worth while to run some diagnostic tool's to confirm all is well with the hard drive.

Some handy info for those thinking of building a new system.
You should kill off all non-essential running background tasks that do not need to be running when the system first starts up, such as quicktime, and other useless utilities, as they can degrade system performance. The system will call these when they are required.
Hijackthis can help handle this better than old fashioned msconfig (almost useless)
The only other thing that can cause similar problems is a poorly performing psu, they can do strange things if not performing well.
Drivers first, tests next, replacement hardware is always last.
