avi to youtube - awful quality, how do I improve it?

Hello,

I am sure this has been posted before - i tried to search the forum but in the end i decided to post so sorry if you have replied to a similar post before!

I have been trying to solve a problem of getting an .avi taken from a canon ixus 860is to look decent on youtube. The avi is clear as a bell but on youtube its horrid.

I have tried to use MeGui to convert, but it keeps failing.
I have used Dr. DivX to convert to a DivX format, choosing resize to 640 x 480 and also tried at 320 x 240. I removed the interlace option etc, The divX looks fine, but again when uploaded to youtube its awful quality and no different from when I uploaded the avi.

I have been reading for hours online about codecs, formats, conversions etc, and have tried several things but to no avail. It sems such a simple thing to want to do yet I can't find a simple guide on how to achieve what I want.

So, please can anyone let me know how to achieve this? where to look? what sware to buy?

The only reason I say "buy" is because its worth paying for something that would save me hours of looking around and trying to find an answer. I dont know about you but unless you flip burgers for a living then it has to be more cost effective!
