Simple Virtual Dub Problem...

I've been using Virtual Dub to edit my avi's for some time now but have always struggled with what I'm sure is a simple problem: whenever I load a clip to edit, the audio quits about 1 second after I press the play button.

It goes without saying, it's more than a bit difficult to find a precise edit point without the audio. What am I doing wrong?

I've always found the audio playback to be patchy at best in virtualdub and its variants. However most of the time I am throwing 1536kbps WAV at it. I've always assumed that it's a horsepower thing. I've just learnt to be more visually observant whilst playing the file back in WMP and then writing down the timecodes from there.

Generally speaking, VirtualDub is not a great media player ---
however there may be various factors that can make things even worse.
At least over here (a 7-yo Pentium IV) VirtualDub has difficulties only to
playback Avisynth scripts, even the simple ones (which are a non-issue to
Media Player Classic, OTOH).
