  2. You would need an HD-DVD player for your pc before you can do that.

When you buy an HD DVD player for your PC, you will see a software that is bundled with the HD DVD player. This will allow you to play HD DVDs on the player. Make sure that your PC meets the hardware/software requirement for HD DVD before buying the player.

One thing to keep in mind before buying the player is that HD DVD has been declared a dead format recently. You may not want to buy into another Betamax

Dont forget that unless you use a software like AnyDVD HD, you PC must have a complete link for HDCP compliance which means your GPU, drivers, and Monitor must all be HDCP compliant.

I would also like to ask - what if any software players besides PowerDVD Ultra will allow play of HD-DVD disks on my PC? I currently have a XBOX hd-dvd drive connected and it plays "regular" DVDs just fine but I dont wanna pay $99 for the PowerDVD and find I need additional drivers and such that cant be found anywhere, before the disks will play

You might not need drivers to make it work on a PC. Connecting the drive to a PC won't make you able to 'see' the files in explorer. You need to rip them to HD with AnyDVDHD (despite claims by DVDFabHD, their product doesn't work).

There's a 21 day trial of AnyDVDHD on SylSoft's website to play around with.

If you want to watch the HD-DVD with menus you need PowerDVD Ultra, otherwise there is a roundabout way you can demux/remux to a file that VLC or Nero will play.
    Regards,

The unfortunate truth is that both commercial HD DVD software players (WinDVD and PowerDVD) both have a LOT of problems with the format. It doesn't help matters at all that both companies are Hollywood's bitch, so even though there is no requirement to do this on the discs, unless your PC video card has HDMI output, both software players will ONLY output at a resolution slightly above standard definition. This truly sucks and it's the motivation behind the guy who broke HD DVD encryption - he simply wanted to play the discs in full HD on his PC and he didn't have a video card that could do HDMI output.

Secondly, nobody really knows why but you need different versions of PowerDVD for different HD DVDs. One HD DVD might play fine in PowerDVD 6.5. Another might work only with version 7.0. Another might play in only 7.1. Another might only play in all 3 versions or only 2 of them. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for this. This may also be true of WinDVD but I don't know. Few people use anything but PowerDVD for HD DVD playback. Creative people who are aware of alternate distribution networks might be able to find ways to, ahem, acquire various releases of PowerDVD for use in HD DVD playing.

Third, both WinDVD and PowerDVD are reported to have released new versions that will NOT play HD DVD on hard disks. You can go back to my "being Hollywood's bitch" comment for an explanation on that one.

I wasnt aware the WinDVD had an HD-DVD version, or that any version of PowerDVD other than the ULTRA version (or some of the japanese versions) had HD-DVD features??

I have Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra and it freezes when I have my ATI 2400 HD PRO video card set to clone mode.
Does anyone know of any other software programs that would play my Hi Def DVD's in clone mode? I looked for a list of HD DVD software players but could not find any on this site.........other than the two that were mentioned in this post.
I am using an HDMI cable from my vid card to my LCD TV and it works if I only set my tv to the main display but it is a hassle sitting at my computer which is 15 ft. away and trying to see the screen well enough to use my mouse while using Ultra.

I would tend to disagree with some statements.

I have a multi format (Blu Ray/HD-DVD) drive. I have PowerDVD Ultra version 7.3 and has been able to play all HD-DVD's Ive thrown at it (I own a dozen so far).

I am connected via DVI and can output at full resolution being 1080P. It is not necessary to have HDMI to display at full resolution, DVI will do as long as it supports HDCP. Most of the latest graphics card are now capable to supporting HDCP.

To play HD-DVD from the hard drive, just use file mode instead of play from hard disk, this works for me fine. You just need to select the EVO files for playback.

Well to add to my recent post, I received an email from Cyberlink's tech support with regards to PowerDVD Ultra freezing up when used in clone mode.
They said they are aware of the problem and do not have a fix for it yet. But they are very sorry for the inconvenience.
I guess if there is no other software out there other than PowerDVD and WinDVD that plays Hi Def DVD's, I will have to put up with using my lcd tv as the only display when watching movies since clone mode does not work.

arcsoft make a player that can play both hd dvd and blu ray http://www.arcsoft.com/products/totalmediatheatre/ also nero 8 with the blu ray/hd plug in,but from my experience its mainly blu ray that has playback issues on any of the three software players I have tried, out of 3 blu ray disks that own only one plays correctly on a fully compliant htpc and tv.

I am using Nero 8 HD (Showtime) to play back the King Kong HD DVD that came with my XBOX 360 HD DVD Drive. Absolutely no problem there. It was also able to play the rip from my hard drive that I made using AnyHDDVD (check the tools on this site).
