  1. Hi,

I've been using Windows Movie Maker and Sonic for basic video editing, making DVDs, youtube videos, and such.

I need to upgrade, as I want to start making music videos and have more options with intertwining multiple audio and video sources.

Can you recommend a more powerful video editing program that isn't too complicated (i'm very techie but I don't want to learn more than I need to), and not too expensive?

I've heard good things about Sony Vegas, but would like to know if there are others that might be a better choice.

    Thanks much.

    Full Vegas is very comprehensive*.

Also check Vegas Movie Studio and ULead Video Studio.

Both have "Premium" versions that add HDV/AVC and more Digital Camera codecs.

*Vegas is built on the SoundForge audio editing platform and has extensive audio capabilities. You can also extend audio features by adding the full SoundForge product.

  3. wow, I just saw the pricetag on the full Vegas. Yikes. Vegas Movie Studio looks more like my price range. Does it have enough features?

Depends on what you need to do. There is a companion audio product in the consumer line called Audio Studio which is often sold "free with rebates". Audio Studio is a cut down version of SoundForge.

B&H Photo (in NYC) is still selling a full version of Vegas 6 at a very reasonable price.

  6. I got the Vegas 6 pro version from B&H a year ago and have never looked back. Kep in mind that this offer is only for Vegas, not DVD Architect. You will probably need a separate DVD Authoring program.

Also check out SmartFlix training DVD rentals. $10 for a week to rent a training DVD that would cost $60 - $80 to buy. Even though this is for Vegas 5 everything you learn can be used in Vegas 6.
