  1. Hello all, i have a panisonic DMR-ES16 video recorder with a DV input for recording from a camcorder etc. My issue is that of 2 questions.
    1. The camcorder has a DV out and AV out what would be the best way to connect it to the recorder and where can i get the cables from? I have a DV to firewire cable to import to my pc, could i get a DV to DV cable or use 2 of these cables with a connector in the middle thus giving DV plug @ each end with the 2 firewire ends coupled in the middle? looking for any other ideas also.

    2. I found a post where someone wrote a driver download to connect these DVD recorder units with DV input for transfering from PC to DVD recorder. I dnloaded it and my pc mow recognises the recorder but i can't figure out how to get pc to send video and audio to the recorder. Could someone give any sujestions please?

If you can help, please email me your input to skinnernlynner@unitz.ca

    Thank you, Deryk

Since the DVD recorder has DV In, you should connect your camcorder via FireWire. You will need a 4-pin to 4-pin cable. The one you have now is probably a 4-pin to 6-pin (i.e, a small plug at one end a larger one at the other). You can buy FireWire cables at most large bricks-and-mortar electronics stores (Best Buy etc).

If your PC's FireWire port has two or more connections (most have three) then it can act as the "splitter". You need to connect the camcorder to the FireWire interface (with your 4-to-6 pin cable) and then use another 4-to-6 pin cable to connect the FireWire interface to the DVD recorder. The DVD recorder will see the same DV stream as the PC.

Getting this to work is a black art. Just because the computer recognizes the DVD recorder it doesn't mean software will. I tried it once. My PC recognized the "AV/C 61883 Subunit" (or something like that), installed a driver but the recorder didn't provide the right information to allow it to be used as a DV device. In contrast, I have a different DVD recorder (a Sony) that simply just works - plug it in and all the right drivers etc get configured.

If your recorder is recognized then any software that you have that can send DV to a camcorder should see the DVD recorder as a valid device.
