I am trying to install a HDD into my parents PC.
It appears to be a SATA drive and I found a 2nd SATA slot right above the first (diagonally up left from the little circley thing on the bottom left above the ON of ALBATRON)

It says 2 Serial ATA150 Channels....does this mean I need a particular type of SATA drive (SATA 2 (is there a SATA1??)

So I plug that part in, no worries, but then I followed the 4 litttle existing power cords (black, red, black, yellow) and they connect into a plastic connection that also takes the power from the floppy disk drive and then they go into a the general population of cords all bundled together with plastic ties and into a round hole in the power supply.

So my problem is, how do I actually plug it into the power supply?

There is a vacant plastic connector bit coming from the DVD drive (there is 2 cords coming out of each slot on the DVD drive, 1 lot goes to general population of cords and second to plastic connection that is empty and just sitting there.

There is also another vacant plastic connector but I cant see to find where this one is coming from.

The vacant plastic connectors I speak of have 4 circular inputs (where the black, red, black, yellows go on the HDD).

When I say general population of cords I mean all the cords in the PC seem to get bundled up (but not all connected to each other) and then fed through a circular hole in the PSU in a neat fashion.

    This is the motherboard picture:

    Thanks for any help.

P.s. I will also be installing a 3rd HDD in my PC at home, if there are any tricks that are relative to installing a 3rd please let me know)

Edit: I forgot to add I have not yet bought the HDD, so if any particular type needed please let me know.

Most drives now are SATA 2 (SATA 300). But they are backward compatible with SATA 1 (SATA 150) drives and controllers.

Some SATA drives can use a 4 pin Molex Power connector, but most use a SATA type power connector. You can get an adapter to a Molex power plug if needed. They don't usually come with the drives, but some drives have that and a SATA data cable included.

For installation and formating, look here: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic346464.html and here: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic346453.html

The adapter and SATA cable look similar to this:

Molex Y adapter. You split off one of your existing power connections to your drives. You can also get these with a SATA power adapter end.

thanks redwuz, that is the 2 cables i have. I read your links but cant seem to find any info on how to plug the power into the PSU.

Do I have to pull my PSU apart to find out where it plugs in?

The SATA connection I can find but the power connection I cant as all the others are bundled and go into the PSU through a hole.

don't take the psu apart. there aren't any more connectors inside. just a bunch of LARGE capacitors that could cause serious damage. if you don't have an extra power plug, get a Y splitter and a sata adapter that goes from molex to the flat sata power type. check the power cable attached to the present sata drive carefully as there are usually 2 on a power lead from the psu.

aedipuss, so all the power connections from the PSU are outside in the bundle and I will find any spares there?

I dont literally have to plug into the PSU it is already done with spare adapters hanging out?

rudyard - correct, if there any spare power leads they are already outside the power supply. don't open it.
