  1. Here I am looking for help again...

I've recorded a few "tests shows" of ATSC HD OTA to DVR-MS with GBPVR. I am testing this format because I've read it typically provides smoother playback. Although I can play the files back with GBPVR I somewhat prefer using WMP11 for playback. However, I've noticed that if I try to play these same DVR-MS files with WMP11, I get audio but no video. I run XP Home SP2 & have PowerDVD installed. According to what I've read that's all I need to play DVR-MS in WMP11.

    Thanks for any insight

P.S. I've been recording to mpg and could play the files back without problem (except for the occasional stuttering, thus the DVR-MS tests) in both GBPVR & WMP11.

I've never used this software, but lack of video or audio during playback is typically a codec issue. The fact that you are trying to use WMP 11 would also seem to indicate that this is a codec related issue.

Have your tried another player? You may want to contact the software developer or go to the forum for this software's support. It could be a known issue and they may already know a fix.

  3. The dvr-ms files play in GBPVR and WatchHDTV, so I have to assume I have the proper codec. I guess my real question is how to get WMP11 to use this codec. I can live without it working in WMP11 but considering that DVR-MS is a MICROSOFT RECORDED file it has become my quest to make WMP11 play it. I haven't been able to find any solutions thus far.

    Thanks again,

I share your frustration for normal XP (not MCE version)

All this works in off the shelf Vista (Premium or Ultimate). Media Player plays DVR-MS, Media Center plays DVR-MS. Windows Movie Maker loads and edits DVR-MS.

When I move the files to XP to edit or convert, none of the MS programs work, only third party products like Nero Vision/Showtime or VLC that use internal codecs.

  5. Well, it looks like things are more complicated than I thought. After testing further tonight, here's what I can & can't play with WMP11:

Can Play - mp3, avi, DVD, & ISO (with daemon tools)

    Can't Play - mpeg, dvr-ms

What's weird is that I used to be able to play mpeg in WMP11. I can't think of any thing I've done to change or remove codecs, but obviously, something has happened.

When I try to play an mpeg or dvr-ms now, WMP11 starts to run for a milisecond then a pop-up says that WMP11 has encountered a problem & needs to close. The Error signature says:
    ModName:quartz.dll
    ModVer: 6.5.2600.3243
    Offset: 0009611d
Clicking on the technical report gives about a 20 page report.

It would seem that if I could reinstall or reregister the codecs, that would solve the problem. But I haven't figured out how, or even which codecs yet. If anyone can offer any help, I as always, will appreciate it.

Reinstall PowerDVD. It loads an MPeg2 decoder.

  7. I was already thinking of trying that this weekend. Hopefully tonight. I'll post if it works or not.[/quote]

  8. Well, a reinstall of PowerDVD and rolling back WMP didn't work either. Since I can get these files to play in other programs I updated back to WMP11.

Don't know why it doesn't work & I'll continue to chip away at it but it really doesn't make any sense at all.

    Thanks for the ideas.

I'd next talk to Cyberlink or one of their forums.

Is it not playing in PowerDVD or WMP 11? From your posts above I was under the impression your issues were with WMP.

  11. You are correct, my problem is with WMP11 not playing MPEG & DVR-MS. It was suggested to reinstall PowerDVD since it loads a MPEG decoder, unfortunately that did not work.

Although I would like WMP11 to play the file types that it should (MPEG & DVR-MS), I have spent too much time on this already without any results. Therefore I am content to use GBPVR for all my video viewing needs. I am actually starting to like it more.

That said, WMP11 should still play MPEGs, so I'll take any suggestions anyone may have.

The problem then, is with WMP 11 not recognizing newly installed codecs (as opposed to a PowerDVD issue). You likely just need to change the priority of the mpeg2 codec used by WMP. But from other posts here and elsewhere, I would dump WMP 11 and go back to a previous version.

  13. OK...I've tried google & such to no avail. How does someone change the priority of the mpeg2 codec used by WMP?
