I have .avi video that I am trying to render to wmv. I got a trial version of Sony Vegas 8. When I render the video it only saves it as an audio file. I have tried several times. I tried to render to mp4 and got the same problem.

Is there something else I need to render the files that I could be missing? I am a complete video noob and have no idea what could be wrong.

    Thanks

  4. He means he downloaded a bootleg copy of Vegas 8. Rotis, when you post don't ever even hint at the fact that you don't have a full, legal version of the software that you purchased yourself. I'm not being sarcastic by saying this, I'm being serious so your questions will more likely be answred in the future.

As for your question, make sure one of your tracks is not muted and make sure both tracks are highlited when you choose to render.

Sorry, I can see how it looked like that was what I was saying. I edited the original post.

The fact is I just got this to try it out though I doubt I will ever purchase the full version. Not sure how long the trial lasts.

When I import videos from my flip video they do not render the video, only the audio. When I import videos that were filmed with other cameras they render just fine. But with these, they only do the audio, this is regardless the size.

    Any ideas?

  6. Looks like it might be a proprietary format that Vegas doesn't see.

maybe. it is an avi file though. And I know others that use vegas for rendering. Very confusing.

    Thanks for the help.

  8. What kind of compression does it use though? AVI is a container and there are many different types of compression schemes that fit inside an AVI.

could it be using a type of compression that I dont have a whatever for? How would i find the compression?

  11. Does "flip video" mean it comes from a cell phone or something like that?

Sometimes MJPEG compression is used but a proprietary "FourCC" code is used in the AVI header. If this is the case, it can be dealt with quite easily (usually!)

If you can post a *short* clip somewhere that will help.

They say it comes with software that allows cuts and making greeting cards.
To say the least, long GOP VBR MPeg4 isn't going to edit well and wasn't intended to.

Find a way to decompress it, then import the raw video into Vegas. Or just cut with their software and be happy.

vegas really doesn't like that video format at all. it won't render it to anything. even stranger is that the mainconcept encoder (which vegas uses internally) in the standalone reference version converts the file without a problem, other than it doesn't output wmv at all. i had to import to mc ref, render to dvavi, give it back to vegas and render to wmv. pia for sure. procoder3 barfed and wouldn't accept it as input, and vlc/avidemux would both convert the video but not the audio..... not sure i'd be at all happy if my cam used this wacky format.
