I'm trying to do a text overlay, per this guide:
    https://forum.videohelp.com/topic344845.html

It's for my boss at work, who is using a Logitech Webcam. However, no program I use will recognize the video. When I open up his logitech software, it says it is being saved as a .avi file, but when I used "alltoavi" software, it reads as WMV2. A properties lookup reveals the same. I then went and got virtualdub13c and another Virtualdub, but they both say asf/wmv not supported, even the virtualdub I downloaded specifically for wmv/asf.

Is there anything I can do to convert this file to a normally recognized video format?

I'd check logitechs website for more information. It's probable they have a proprietary conversion software for their own file format. If not they should at least offer recommendations for conversions.

Also load the file into GSPOT and you will find the true codec that was used. That should help a little.

hmm, I'll have to check. I did load it into Gspot, it says it's a .ASF container, with the video part saying WMV2 codec and a WMP v8 for the name. Status says "Codec Status Undetermined"

Since it is an asf container using wmv codecs, try using WMM instead.

Thanks Krispy, I'm checking that out right now.

One final question. Lets say I can't get this to work, or it's just too much of a hassle. What simple free program would you all use for webcam capture? The logitech one is so simple, click one button and start recording, but it's a PITA afterwards!

I've never used one myself. But you may want to dig through the Logitech software and see if it allows capture to a different format.
