I've read posts on this before, and whilst not exactly a newbie at authoring, I haven't a clue how to do this:

If I rip a DVD, I get VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, these contain VOB files and I use a simple burning process to put them onto a DVD5. As I only ever use DVD5s, I sometimes use DVD Shrink beforehand also.

When dealing with an AVI, I have had to use ConvertX to DVD, with very disappointing results; the grainyness of the picture and colour distortion on dark backgrounds is abysmal. This is with all settings turned way up.

The effect is less pronounced when dealing with MKV files, but still a 4gb file becomes 2.2gb when Convert X to DVD reads the file; why is this? I've changed settings to allow for DVD9 (with the intention of simply using DVD Shrink afterwards) yet Convert X to DVD still only creates a 2.2gb VIDEO_TS file.

Is there any other programmes that will maintain the quality of a HD MKV video? Preferably a simple one, that deals with any muxing issues without giving me too many 'off the wall' options. I don't really want anything changed from the original file.

    Thanks

Thats impossible because DVD is no HD. But try FAVC instead of ConvertXtoDVD.

does it have to be (1) TS file

I think your hitting a widow file size barrier, going to DVD you should be getting multiple VOBS at aprox (1) gig each, check your settings again

you don't want just (1) vob if your burning to DVD

and if your converting to 'transport streams' try setting for multple files, then use an editing program like avidemux2 or some other program to join them into (1) big TS file

BTW avidenmux2 will create mpeg-TS files if thats what you want , its in the output format selections menu , 3rd button /box, down, on the left of the program window
