    Hi there,

I am fairly new to ripping DVD's to VCD's and I have noticed that sometimes when I rip and burn to VCD, some VCD's appear as widescreen and some as 4:3 ratio on my computer screen.

How do I ensure that everytime I rip, it appears as widescreen.

NB. All of the DVDs I have ripped are widescreen.

    Thanks.

  2. Go to the Settings - Advanced and make sure:
    Source Aspect: 16:9 Display
Full Screen (keep aspect ratio 2)

This will convert even a Full Screen DVD into Wide Screen, but do note, that doing so will make your movie look like it needs a diet!

  4. Hardly a restoration...

Set the source aspect ratio to match the DVD (I'm assuming 16:9 here).
Set the output aspect ratio to 4:3.
One of the "Full Screen" methods should do it, I just can never remember which one.

Of course, doing this will cut large portions of the movie off of the left and right sides, destroying the director's original vision. :P

  5. for once I agree kinneera, you are butchering the movie and you will be losing parts of it, but it's your choice.

OK, another question on this then, sorry, I should have asked before:

If the original is widescreen (for me 16:9 PAL) and then using SmartRipper and DVD2AVi, then encoding it using the options that Sefy advised on, the resulting mpg will look like the DVD, is this correct?

If the original DVD is full-screen, just leave the options lone, or else the resulting mpg will look crap?

OK, just another question, I ripped a DVD which was Widescreen Format (2.35:1) and had the options:
Source aspect ratio: 4:3 (PAL) and
    Video Arrange Method: Full Screen,

and when ripped, it appeared as wide-screen.

Can you tell me what is going on here, as in explain the logic, thanks.

  7. Realized too that the final MPG may look differently on your pc than it will on your tv. I always convert/burn a small 30-second clip first to make sure the aspect ratio is how I want it on my tv, as watching it on the pc isn't always the same.

  8. Some movies (like old Disney's, eg: The Little Mermaid) are Wide Screen, but they are authored as Full Screen, which means the Black Bars are part of the movie, so when you encode them, you select 4:3 like you would any movie.

And the Black Bars are simply encoded with the rest of the movie, while the other movies which the black bars are not part of the movie itself, you need to specify that your source is 16:9, so TMPGEnc will know how to handle it in the correct form.

  9. here is how to reproduce the picture in the same aspect ratio and picture type as it originally was:

    for an anamorphically enhanced dvd:
on the video tab set the aspect ratio to '16:9 Display'
on the advanced tab set the source aspect ratio to '16:9 Display'
on the advanced tab set the video arrange method to 'full screen'

    for an 4:3 dvd:
on the video tab set the aspect ratio to '4:3 Display'
on the advanced tab set the source aspect ratio to '4:3 Display'
on the advanced tab set the video arrange method to 'full screen'

for least loss of colour and detail:
when using dvd2avi and tmpgenc together, in dvd2avi set yuv->rgb to 'tv scale', and in tmpgenc tick 'output yuv data as basic ycbcr not ccir601'
