  1. Hi everyone,

Looking to purchase a new DVD player that will play my Divx files off my hard drive through USB.

I am looking at the OPPO DV-980H and was wondering if anyone has had any luck with playing the files from a hard drive.

What player do you recommend and why.

    Thank you,
    Craig

I regularly play AVIs from USB HDD (1.8", no external power) on my (see Computer Details) DVD Recorder. Works like a charm.

Do note that some DVD players that play files through USB do NOT support the NTFS filesystem but only FAT32. I have no idea what the Oppo supports, but you definitely need to know if this will be a problem for you. We get a lot of posts from angry people who found out that anything attached to a USB port had to be on a FAT32 file system, so they were screwed. You can blame Microsoft for this and their unwillingness to allow device manufacturers to support NTFS cheaply.

I'd extend that, to virtually no DVD player supports anything but FAT32.

  6. So if I purchase a hard drive, I should format it to FAT or FAT32, right?
Should I just get a USB hard drive with case and have it next to my player? Are there any stand alone hard drive that get the power from the USB?

    Thank you,
    Craig

    Correct.

    Yes.

Yes. For bigger drives, avoid that. The drive I use is just a small drive (1", 4 GB), and consumes very little power. Bigger USB HDDs (3.5", 2.5") should have a separate power supply, as the USB power from the player may not be sufficent.

    Hi all,

I used HDDs with my Philips DVP 3260 DVD palyer as long as they were FAT32 and would not exceed a certain limit -I could not get it to work with 250GB HDD external USB 2.5" drive but 40Gb worked great. Sadly the DVD Player-USB HDD combo is useless once you get a LCD HD panel. Why? No MKV support, usually no MOV or MWV support on players, and worst of all you can hardly find any HD movie files smaller that 4GB which is the FAT32 limit. I am going for a WD HD TV Media player with USB/HDMI -It costs 120$, supports MKV and any format under the sun, can play 30GB Bluray HD files from an USB NTFS HDD drive and you can even have network and youtube connectivity with the "Live" version.
