So, true beginner here.
I want to connect my laptop to my tv so I can use it as a monitor.
I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 with a
Mobile Intel® 915GM Express Chipset
and a VGA output
I also have a
Phillips 27" Flat Screen Television, Model 27PT643R37A
with a S-video input
I've looked at simple cables VGA to S-Video, but my techy roommate say I need an expensive conversion box.
Any solutions or advice would be greatly appriciated.

Hi,
If your notebook does not have s-video out you will need a scan converter to go vga->s-video.
Something like:
