Need to easily convert vp7 to xvid. My two different divx players (hooked up to TV's) will not handle a vp7 file I downloaded. I know the file is good because when I added the vp7 codec onto my PC the file played fine.
I perfer 'brainless' software. AutoGK and AVIrecomp solve any compatability issues I have with xvid and divx with great results (to me).
Is there something similar for vp7 conversion? Freeware is great. Tutorial links are helpful.
I did search here before posting and the only thing I saw was one Vdub reference. But it wasn't clear. Is it as simple as pulling it in, converting video and using a direct audio copy? If so what settings would you suggest I begin with assuming I want to maintain as much video quality as possible to play on large screen standard def TV?
Thanks

Yes, if you have a VFW VP7 decoder installed.Originally Posted by EAO

Press the Load Defaults button in the Xvid config dialog. That will work pretty well. If you want a little higher quality change the Target Quantizer to 3.Originally Posted by EAO

Baldrick: I have a weak grasp of what you are asking. If I say .avi container... as in xvid - does that answer your question or am I still missing? (This is why I posted in newbie)

I need this file to play like my other .avi files do and I usually always convert avi into xvid with mp3 if I have any compatability issues using the original file.

jagabo: I believe I must have it installed. I let GOM player seekwhen it wouldn't play and after it downloaded the vp7 codec I ran the exe program to install it. Everything played great on the PC after that. Do I need to put the codec in a particular VDub folder also?

Just open your VP7 AVI file in VirtualDub. Select Video -> Compression..., select the Xvid codec and configure it, then Save as AVI.

FYI, there are two "public" video subsystems in Windows: the older VFW (Video For Windows) and the newer DirectShow. VirtualDub uses VFW. The VP7 codec installation includes a VFW docoder so VirtualDub will use it.

	Thanks for all the help.

Worked like a charm (just like you knew it would).

Took a very minor hit on image quality and it was well worth it (as I am not playing on HD and not storing 'for later'.)

i downloaded videodub and a vp7 codec (from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VP7.htm). i then followed the instructions (video --> compression ---> xvid), then hit save as .avi.

i then get an error message saying "statsfile not found", followed by another error message saying "cannot start video compression: the operation is not supported (error code -1)"

what am i missing here? any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are in two-pass mode, attempting to run the second pass without running the first pass. I recommend you set Xvid to Single Pass, Target Quantizer mode, with a quantizer of 3.
