  1. I've made a few avi's with Vdub and Vdubmod, xvid with CBR audio and they are fine but recently I've tried to make them with ABR in the Lame compression settings with no luck (audio skips then goes out of sync around 1 min in and gets further out of sync thru the entire vid)

I've also used VBR converted WAV's that I saved from the original source and added as a stream in vdubmod with the same (or worse) results.

I can play other peoples xvid avi's with ABR/VBR audio with no problems but cant make them myself. Can anyone point me to tutorials on how to do this or give some advice?

Why? The gain (quality vs file size) is very small (if it exist at all). VBR MP3 in AVI is a PITA. Avoid.

  5. As far as I can tell, VirtualDub's handling of the Lame ACM codec's ABR is borked. Try AviDemux instead.

I found one way to fix the out-of-sync ABR audio streams created by VirtualDub:

Open the AVI file with VirtualDubMod. Go to Streams -> Stream List and Demux the ABR audio track. This will create an MP3 file. Now Disable the audio track and Add the MP3 file you just created. When asked if you want to fix the header answer NO. Put the Video in Direct Stream Copy mode and Save as AVI. The resulting AVI file shouldn't have any sync problems.

    Suggestion: encode with lame.exe,
    multiplex with AVI-Mux GUI.
