Being a newbie is liking being a virgin. After your first time, you aren't one anymore, no matter what you tell people.

    Depends on whats what

If files are in rar achives , then zipgenius can unpack them

Then it comes down to what was contained within , the guess would be some form of movie .
Video's inside zip, rar, ace, are only good for password protection .

Gspot is the first tool you should have, and provides internal information of avi's and others .
Then in the case all is well , and decoders are installed , you then decide on what to do with it .

Avi's comprising of xvid + mp3 can be burnt directly to cd , some home dvd players support mpeg4 play .

    Conversion to dvd :

Avidemux, AVStoDVD, DVDforger, FAVC, or the old free vsoDivxToDVD .

There is much more, but this should give you a start .

And dont forget about imgburn, the best tool for burning to media.

Hmm... I've been a member since 2002 and I don't have all the answers. But that also doesn't answer the OPs questions, if he(she) finally states them all.

Try WinRAR first if you need to rejoin a bunch of files that might end in .r01 or similar, or the freeware 7-Zip should work. Then try ConvertXToDVD to convert to something you can play on a standalone DVD player. Freeware, maybe FAVC. And please do a bit of reading.
