Forgive me if this has been discussed before. I searched and found alot of discussion but nothing that solves my "problem".

I'm looking to be able to rip a DVD into a MPG that will include the subtitles. I'm not so interested in converting it into another format such as DivX/Xvid, etc. I'd like to do away with that conversion time and just keep the default stream. File size is not a issue where a solution like DivX comes into play with compression.

My current method is as follows. Rip DVD to ISO on hard drive using DVD Decrypter. Open ISO in DVD Shrink and re-author. Select 1 audio stream, usually 5.1 unless only 2 channel is available. Select all 'English' subtitle streams. Set the default streams. If there is more than one subtitle stream, I choose the biggest in size. I set no compression and rip to HD as files. I set no file size limit so it rips into one vob. I then convert the vob to mpg. I then delete all the other files.

In my new found method, I have found out that the subtitles are not stored in the vob but rather in the other files I have been deleting! So I'm looking for a tool or way to take the DVD Shrink output files - IFO, VOB, etc. - and convert those into a MPG where it will overlay the subtitled text right into the MPG as a image overlay or whatever. I am thinking there has to be a way to take the subtitled text wherever it is (IFO, etc) and 'inject' that into the vob and then retain that when converted to MPG.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You must reconvert the video to "inject" the subtitles into the mpg. I would try find an all-in-one dvd to mpg tool that add permanent subtitles, I think the old dvdx and dvd2svcd supports this.

Or why not use external subtitles? But it requires that your player supports external sub then.

The subtitles are stored in the vob but you need the ifo because it contains the information where it stored.

VLC media player supports subs in an external file.

Bottom line - having hard subbed MPEG video requires you to re-encode.

Isn't it just so you can author to a new dvd with dvdauthor? I don't think video players will play those subs.

    From http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/doc/examples.html

    1.1.2. Adding subtitles with spumux

spumux takes an mpeg2 program stream as input and spits one back out, with subtitles multiplexed in. It is run as:

    spumux spumux.xml < input.mpg > output.mpg

The bottom line is I'm looking to play MPG files on my PS3. I can burn the files to a DVD and play them that way, but that involves putting a disc in and taking it out. Also I'd have to buy a bunch of dual-layer discs with movies than span more than 4GB. I don't want to compress the movies either to make them fit on a 4Gb disc. With 1 mpg file, I can copy it over the network to the PS3, watch it and delete it off the HD when I'm done. The PS3 isn't able to play vob files with IFO's from a folder locally on the hard drive from what I know. Then again maybe it is and I'm making my life more difficult than it needs to be!

So it sounds like this may work? I just have to figure out how to properly format the XML file

  6. ...The PS3 isn't able to play vob files (with subtitles)
Then spumux will not help you. Actually the subtitles are stored in the vob files, but without any color information. Just the color information is in the ifo files. VLC is able to show the subtitles in vob files with default colors (which may fit or not) and also for 'half vob' mpg files created by spumux. But AFAIK it is the only player which shows subtitles in vob/mpg files without an ifo file (and of cause only if the colors are 'standard').

Yeah, currently I convert the vob to mpg and play them on the PS3. I'd like to find a way to burn the subtitle info into the mpg so it's actually there as a image in the mpg.

It's not that big of a deal, not many titles I watch have subtitles but there are some unexpected ones like Wayne's World for example, where he does some 'Cantonese' dialog and it subtitles in english.

I don't want subtitles on always, just normal dialog but where there would be subtitles in english, for them to show. It looks like it's not possible.

That is possible, but only with a time intensive/quality reducing reencoding step. If only forced subtitles are required, it would be possible to reencode just the parts of the movie where the (forced) subtitles are visible. But I don't know any program which would do such a thing automatically.
The best way to go is using an external (text based) subtitles file, but I don't know if the PS3 can handle those.

I do it in this way. (MTV and concert)
Use ImTOO DVD Ripper, select the subtitle, audio channel. Output to DVD format *.vob
No quality reduce, fast and easy.
rename the vob file to mpg
