    When I try to encode this into any format I either get 'failed' or it complete instantaneously but no file results:

    According to the logfile you posted, ffmpegx is unable to decode the source file, which apparently uses the ancient codec Indeo 5. Quicktime does not handle Indeo 5 decode in OS X (as far as I know), so if you selected the "decode with QT" option, that's likely your problem. Instead, try the "decode with mplayer" option (which should be able to decode Indeo 5).

    And if that doesn't work, try renaming the source file to "vegemite.avi" and see what happens...
