    Hi all,

    Just wondering: do all these DVD players with "divx playback" have the ability to play DivX-HD files also (resolution 1280x720, 1440x580, etc.)?

    The resolution for some of my Divx files are in "720p", so I was just wondering if that mattered before I go out and buy a Divx DVD player. I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question. Thanks all!

    You need to follow any new models on the Divx site. There haven't been any new ones in months.

  3. Very few players will play Divx files over 720x480 30 fps, or 720x576 25 fps. The ones that do usually cost in the US$300 range. And they are usually limited to 1280x720. Some examples:

    The LinkPlayer2 will play Divx/Xvid 1920x1080 progressive files but limits interlaced files to 1440x1080.

    Hey everyone, thanks so much for the responses. That definitely answered my question.

    I guess the cheapest and easiest thing to do is just hook up my comp to my HDTV (as a monitor) and play the DivX-HD files that way. Better than spending upwards of $300!

    That's what I do with a DVI->HDMI cable.

    Yes plus the best thing is you don't have any size constraints that way! However large your harddrive space is will be your restriction! Best thing to do.

    Note that many of the players that support HD Divx playback have been reported to have rather severe bit rate limits. I've heard of some players that won't play any HD files at all unless the bit rate is below 6000 Kbps. Playing back on a PC is probably best unless you can investigate and be sure that any player won't choke on the bit rate your video files use.

    From the listed devices, only the popcornhour a-100 and the dvico tvix m-6500a will successfully play higher rate 720 and 1080 files. The two are based on the newer sigma design smp8635 chipset.
