I have several DivX avi files but when I convert them to DVD they wont play in my DVD player. My DVD player obviously does not support DivX files so my question is how can I convert the AVI's to DVD so that they can play on any DVD player?

A good piece of software you could try is called ConvertXToDVD, its available as a fully 100% functional 14 day trial so you can see if its going to be useful to you before buying

The trial version works 100% with no restrictions placed on you in anyway, unlike a lot of 'free' trial software that puts watermarks in your videos or even worse restricts the functions of the software

I always thought the point of trialware is to see if the software suits your needs, ho wcan you do that if it restricts what can be done

It will easily convert virtually any video format to PAL or NTSC DVD automatically and is one of the few pieces of software the can keep the audio in synch, especially if converting from xvid/divx back to DVD

It can handle divx, xvid, mkv, mpg, avi, ts, etc, etc

Change the default settings to high quality for the encoder, it wil take longer but the wait is worth it in the final result. The built-in menus do work for multiple sources, but are pretty atrocious in how they look

v3.0 is available as a free download, and has much improved menus but is still in beta testing so will have bugs, but can be donwloaded by anybody

Also, I found that using the built-in burning engine DVDs refuses to be recognised by my DVD player, but using IMGBurn (which I normally use anyway) solved the problem. I kno wother people that it works fine with, so if it works for you, stick to it

Thanks for the advice. Another question though, If I convert the DivX movies to ISO's or image files can I then just use IMGBurn to burn them to DVD and have them work on any DVD Player or do I still have to use ConvertXToDVD first?

If your DVD player won't play Divx files then you have to convert them to a DVD compliant structure. ISO/image files are just CD/DVD images, and can contain anything. You have to encode your video to DVD compliance (see What is DVD - top left corner of this page) then author, then burn.

ConvertXtoDVD, FAVC or DVD Flick can do the conversion and authoring for you. FAVC and DVD Flick are free and worth a try.

You don't need to have an ISO to burn with Imgburn. Just use it in Build mode and select the Video_TS folder. It knows what to do with it.

    Not really.

Download the free video converter evaluation software now and just see for yourself! (this version comes with a watermark on the video output.).

Thanks for all your help. I tried using DVD Flick to simply convert the DivX movies to DVD and it worked just fine. I simply needed to set the output format to NTSC instead of PAL. Its always the smallest things right.

It is just another ffmpeg front-end. Doesn't do anything special, and isn't as well featured as DVD Flick. The quality is average for this type of program, not quite as good as DVD Flick. I haven't tested it for format conversion, but I suspect it doesn't use the pulldown method, so expect jerky results. The latest beta of DVD Flick does use the pulldown method, FAVC has used it for quite a while (possibly since the beginning) and ConvertXtoDVD started using it from version 2 onwards. It is also no faster than DVD Flick, can't join titles and has no menu options.

spam does have a very simple interface (something that DVD Flick does not have), so if you are totally afraid of having to know anything about what you are doing, it might suit. Otherwise it has nothing to offer to make me want to use it over more featured, higher quality freeware tools based on the same (or better) toolsets.
