I just got my first DVD+-RW drive a pioneer 112D. I am using Roxio Creator 8 for converting my AVI/DIVX files to DVD. The process to I go through in Roxio is to select the DIVX to DVD option, then I pick the AVI file I want to convert and burn to DVD, and click burn. That has seemed to work great as far as the end result I have a movie that I can watch on my DVD player in the living room, which is the ultimate goal, at this point. However, the who conversion and burn process is taking me about 6 to 7 hours. Typically the AVI files that I am converting are 700MB to 750MB.
From reading other posts it seems like the conversion process is not that fast, but 6 to 7 hours seems a bit long. Also, do most people put a few movies on one DVD or just one? My burns of 700MB take up about 4 GB give or take a bit. Thanks for the help, and I apologize that I am so green. Thanks for any help.

You can try other tools and see if they are faster, like ConvertXtoDVD. You can try put 2 movies(3-4hours video) on one dvd and see how it looks like, the quality may be enough for you.
But 6-7 hours doesn't say much until you give us more information about your computer. It just says 1.53 under your CPU tab. -
Thanks for the response. I am new to this and appreciate your patience. I have updated my computer details. I already have ConvertXtoDVD, but have yet to try it out. Does it just do the conversion process and then you have to burn that image onto a CD or does it do it all in one process like I am currently doing with Roxio 8?

Congrats on your new burner. You could also try the program FAVC to convert them. I've used it in the past and gotten good results with the HCenc encoding engine on best settings if you are looking for a one-click type solution.
No offense intended but it does not look like you have a super strong rig. So your encode times may be higher then others. One thing you can do is set it to encode an episode or two overnight or when you head out to work / school so it is done by the time you get back. That way it does not tie up your system during the times you want to use it.
General rule is about 2 hours on a dvd at about 4.3 GB. So that gives you 2 one hour shows or 4 half hour shows. I don't use Roxio but a very popular burning software is ImgBurn to burn the ISO file to disc. It is not always wise to burn at the fastest speed possible. My burners are 16x and I get the best results with 8x. Using good media helps as well. Good luck.
Cheers,

If you plan to watch a lot of Divx files you should consider a Divx certified DVD player. Then you can just burn your Divx files onto a data CD or DVD. Some even have USB ports so you can just copy your Divx files to a flash drive or external hard drive. A player like the Philps DVP-5960 is available for around US$60.

RickA, I know I do not have the best rig in town, I appreciate your honesty. I have other computers, this is just the one I use to download, burn and store my media files. I will just mess around a bit with some of the software you guys have mentioned and see if I can not bring those times down a bit.
Jagabo, I did not even think about DVD players that could play Divx or ones that had a usb port, that is awesome. So the transfer is fast enough to watch a movie right from the usb flash drive or external drive? -
Divx/DVD players aren't the perfect solution. There are some Divx/Xvid settings that cause problems for them so not all files will play. The USB 1.1 ports on the Philips players can't handle high bitrates but most Divx files are low enough. You won't be able to play VOB files ripped from DVDs -- the bitrate will be too high. Also, the player only displays 8 character file names from USB devices. The devices must be formatted FAT32.
There are a few players with USB 2.0 ports that can play NTFS formatted disks. They can play DVD ISO images, IFO/VOB files and high def Divx. They also have wired ethernet, and wireless ports and can read from Windows shares. They cost around US$200 though.

I am not in the market now for a DVD player, but when I am in about a year. I am sure all those features and more will be available. That is great. Thanks for the help.
