  1. Hello

This is the first time I am trying to use avi.net. I am trying to encode a Trailer of a Movie to XviD. In the AV Option, as I choose anything between the 1CD to Maximum (both inclusive), I get a warning when I try to add the job. It says that: "The video bit rate is very high , do you want to continue" (some thing like it). If I choose custom size then avi.net does not suggest any size for the output and it tells me to press return after selecting the video size, about which I have no idea.

I have used a VTS file corresponding to the triler from the ripped DVD folder as the input.

Could some one help me please?

    Thank you.

Try it using the Quality Mode instead of Size. Lower numbers = higher quality.

    Look here also.

    Thank you MysticE

But could you please explain how do I do that? I mean from where do I select the mode? There seem to be no option like that...

Is it the "Single Pass Quant"? And if it is, then choosing "1" here will provide best quality output?

  4. Ok, I found it out. But it seems that in this option, I can only do Single Pass Encoding. So to do multi pass encoding, like for the full movie should I choose the Maximum Size option?

Sorry, I know my questions sound like too newbie like, but thats what I am in encoding DVD to XviD.
I tried using AGK, but it is producing completely Out of Sync movie.

    EDIT

    Here is the update,

I have converted a small trailer with avi.net with Quality Setting "1". Now when I open this file in media Info, it is reported that the codec used is DivX5 whereas I used XviD for sure.

    From guns1inger's comment:

Quantizer gives you a known quality level (relative to the source) but with an unknown file size. If quality is the most important factor then use target quantizer encoding and live with the file size.

The 2 pass encoding will enable a better 'fit' to a target size distributing bitrate where it is needed, not necessarily the best quality possible, but the best for the size you choose. The first pass is an information stage used to determine how best to distribute the bitrate based on a chosen end size.

How did your clip turn out? Does it look good? As far as the Divx thing I can't answer that. I assume you have the Xvid codec installed. Does GSpot also report it as Divx?

  6. Thank you clearing the air

Yes, I have the Latest XviD codec installed. The clip turned out good (apparently). Though as I have no experience of backing up, I am not 10% sure about the quality. What really worries me is the report of GSpot which is not very clear.

Give me a little time I shall post the GSpot screen shot for your review.

    Thanks again.

  7. Here are the screenshots:

From the size, it appears that AGK is giving best output (about 172MB in size) and avi.net, least (about 86MB in size). Fair Use comes very near to avi.net in terms of size, but the metadata of avi.net looks like a junk. Furthermore, there seems to problem in case of Codec for avi.net as GSpot reports it as DivX5, for all others it is correctly interpreted as XviD.

The trouble with AGK is as I try to encode the full movie in 100% quality setting, the Audio and Video are completely out of sync from the very beginning. I have started another thread on this in this forum.

    Any idea?
