Did you use 'Run as administrator'? Try it also in XP SP2 compatibility mode. R click the .exe>Properties>Compatibility' I suspect the problem might be because of a unsigned program. You might also try turning off UAC and DEP temporarily. Vista doesn't like .exe files that it haven't been passed through MS approval.

You might also explain a bit more clearly what you are doing and why. A firmware upgrade?

What I see from those screen shots is you have a problem with the device (The yellow checkmark) and you are trying to upgrade the firmware for the drive at the same time? Was that checkmark there before you started to upgrade?

If the device and it's drivers are not working or installed, I would see a problem upgrading the firmware.

I would fix the device problem first. The firmware program is probably not recognizing the drive because of the checkmark. Vista should have supplied the necessary drivers for the burner. I use Vista 32, but I've never installed any drivers for four burners on two computers, two of them SATA. The OS took care of that.

In device manager, you might try 'Scan for hardware changes' and see if Vista can install a proper driver. If not, uninstall the the device in Device manager and reboot. It it still doesn't install a driver or you have a driver and still have a checkmark, take a look at your cables and connections. Also jumper settings if it's a PATA drive. Make sure you have a 80 conductor cable also if it's a PATA drive. Did the burner work before at all?

Firmware shouldn't have anything to do with your OS. You could always try the burner in a XP computer and do a firmware upgrade there. If Vista doesn't have a proper driver, Memorex should.

    yes it did work before.
    it is an ideo drive.
this is the only thing connected by IDE on my computer.
It should be set as Master right?
What is an 80 conductor cable?

Master would be my choice, using the socket at the end of the IDE (PATA) cable. Most all newer burners need a 80 conductor cable, the same type as a hard drive uses. The older 40 conductor cable is similar in appearance to a floppy drive cable. I would also check that it is plugged in securely at both ends.

If all that fails, replace the cable. (They're cheap) then see if Memorex has a Vista 64 driver in case Vista isn't installing the correct one.

i just tried replacing the IDE cable with 2 different new ones.
Do you mean the SATA cable thing (80 conductor)? the drive doesn't have an end for that.

That's looking like you have a motherboard problem, or at maybe a BIOS problem. I would reboot, go into BIOS and see if there are any settings there for PATA drives. Not likely, but worth checking. BTW, SATA and PATA (Parallel ATA) are both IDE/ATA interfaces, so I just use SATA and PATA to differentiate them. If there is something wrong with your PATA interface, do you have a spare SATA connection?

Or it really is a driver problem with Vista 64. But I don't see that happening with different drives.

I'm glad you got it fixed. Maybe somewhere in all that the V64 drivers got corrupted.
