Hi, i gotta ask, do i really need Gordian Knot Codec Pack in order to encode with GKnot or can i just do it with any codec pack, like K-Lite for example, by the way, can someone recommend me some codecs packs? One more thing, i need a good tool to encode the movie audio to mp3 (from .ac3), i've been doing it with BeSweet (comes with GKnot), but i never get the exact bitrate, he does whatever he wants and it's driving me crazy, well at this point i gess i'm nuts already.

I can recommend that you don't ever install a codec pack. There is simply no need, and the risk to your system is not worth the small and dubious benefit afforded by such packs.

Short answer is no, you don't need the gknot codec pack, or any other codec pack. You just need to use your brain and a couple of good tools like g-spot, mediainfo and video inspector. If you find something doesn't play or convert, work out what you are missing, and install only that codec as required. You will find that you don't need too many to convert the bulk of videos out there, and you have control over what is happening.

Installing a codec pack is like swatting a fly with a 12 gauge shotgun. You kill the fly, but you also kill your TV, your grandmother and the neighbor's dog. Lot of collateral damage.

You could also make life simpler by using AutoGK instead.
