  1. I try to make a DivX file using the mencoder and all I get is a completely green video with audio playing(using VLC.) It doesn't work period on my DVD players/PS3. I've successfully created MPEG4 video to play on my PS3 but this file will not play on any of my other DivX compatibility players and I really want to get something compatible across the line. I am using passthrough audio to preserve 5.1 audio.

    Any ideas? thanks in advance

I don't get why you would want to convert DVD to DivX in order to play it on a DVD player, but that's your prerogative.

Is the VIDEO_TS correctly recognized? Does the Summary tab say something like: From VIDEO_TS; Video: mpeg-2, 720x480, 8000 kbps, 29.97 fps; Audio: ac3, 48000Hz, 448 kbps

Does the VIDEO_TS play in ffmpegX's mplayer? Either through the [Play] button in the top-right corner or the [Preview] button in the bottom-right corner of the Filters tab.

Is it a homemade DVD or commercial (because of possible copy protection issues)?
Did you rip the DVD yourself? With what tool/version?

  3. Want to make DivX just for storage and so I can play on most of my machines, they are all DivX compatibale.

VIDEO_TS is recognized. Seems the other codecs work except this one. Right now I am using the Xvid codec. It seems to take quite a bit longer but seems to work with 5.1 audio passthrough in my PS3 and most of my DVD players. For whatever reason, I just can't get DivX to work.

I ripped myself with Mac The Ripper.

    Thanks for the reply

If all you want to do is backup your DVDs in Divx format, the best tool for this on the mac is D-Vision3. I highly recommend giving it a try to see if it will work for your purposes. It's freeware, and unlike other free stuff, it is a very well-polished piece of software.
