  1. There is an MPG file that when I open it in Gspot, the Aud button does not render, and the Vid button does not render. If I hit the MS A/V, the audio and video play fine. Why does the M/S render when Aud and Vid do not?

Each time I have used Gspot to try to diagnose a problem, it always shows the audio and video codecs as being installed, yet there is a problem, or I would not be trying to troubleshoot. Why does Gspot show codecs as being installed yet there is a problem with audio or video playback?

How can I better learn to use Gspot? I tried AVIcodec. When I loaded the file that I am trying to play (MPEG2 with 48Khz LPCM audio), it reported that LPCM is not yet supported. Huh?

Understand that the MPG file at issue (now) plays, even though there is some tearing and some random pixelization on the right side of the screen that is not present when I play the file on another computer. The problem computer reports using the CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD7) while the good computer reports using AverMedia MPEG Decoder. Is it possible to install the Avermedia codec on the problem machine without installing Avermedia? How?

To use the AverMedia codec, you would need to install that software. Although there shouldn't be any issues with the codec currently used, it is generally one of the best. There are also several other codecs that you could use, just take a look in the Tools - Codecs section.

Otherwise, it just sounds like a typical codec issue. To troubleshoot, install a player such as VLC which uses it's own codecs.

  3. This might work: use a program like codec sniper to determine which file is the AverMedia codec. It will likely be in the \Windows\System32 folder. Copy the file to the other computer and register it with RegSvr32.exe.
