  1. This is very odd and it just started happening for no reason. I installed some video editing software when I noticed it (which I have repeatedly uninstalled/reinstalled). All videos play fine in VLC but I really want to play mpeg videos in Vista Media Center. I have literally tried everything, from reinstalling ffdshow, xvid, divx, codec packs etc. I used gspot and get the codec put it doesn't seems to be installing properly. As I said everything played fine and now codecs don't register at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"codec packs" made it worse. Uninstall them all, maybe manually remove some (Muxman, I believe), and then CCleaner the system registry.

Too many codecs is worse than having none.

  3. I uninstalled anything that I found which was a codec checker, xvid and ffdshow. Used CCleaner to clean registry, rebooted, reinstalled xvid, tried to play an xvid file, not playing, doesn't recognise file type in WMP 11 Vista.

Update: Ok, I think im on to something. I got them working in MPC when I switched the mpeg file associations from DirectShow to RealMedia. Is there anyway to wither reinstall directshow or chnage them in WMP?

This seems to be a common problem with Vista and WMP 11. A fix will likely need to come from MS.

You could always use a different player until MS corrects the WMP 11 issues.
