I am trying to convert an avi that is labeled .DVDSCR.XViD.avi but when I drag it into the "source format" section it just shows up as Unrecognized. There must be something I'm missing, but what?

ffmpegX should have no problem recognizing XviD AVIs, if it is really that.
Try to confirm with other tools that your file is in fact an XviD AVI.
Does it open in QuickTime Player? Does Cmd-I tell the video and audio codec?
Does MediaInfo Mac GUI confirm the format and codecs?
Does VLC's Information window, Advanced Information tell the video and audio codec?
