  1. We have purchased a new PC and installed Windows Vista. But our Old DVD writer failed to perform in the new system.

So we purchased a new Sony DRU-190A with Vista support and installed it.
When we tried to burn DVD we get the following error message.

Can someone who is familiar with this kind of error, figure out what went wrong?

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Try some other media not -RW

Did you use an 80 wire IDE cable? Or did you use your old cable. Drive jumpered master or cable select?

    Disconnect your other optical drive.

    planetx,

    "What went wrong" was:
Nero told the drive to quick format the -rw disk
After 4 minutes, Nero asked the drive if it was done yet.
Even though Nero says the drive answered "Logical unit not ready, operation in progress", what it really said was "Logical unit not ready, format in progress". In other words, the drive hadn't finished the quick format yet.
Nero decided that if the quick format couldn't complete in 4 minutes, it never would, so it terminated the burn.

    Things you can try:
If you were doing something else on the computer during the format, try leaving it alone during a burn.
Try using ImgBurn instead of Nero.
Try a different disk. If that doesn't work, either try a different brand of -rw, or try +rw.
If that doesn't work, there is a hardware problem (drive, cabling, etc). In that case, someone else here should be able to help you.

    Disable:
    "Multisession : TRUE
    Multisession type: : Start multisession
    Burning mode : DAO"

Also, that DVD-RW used is cheapo stuff. Full format it first using NOT nero, but imgburn etc.

Is the burner in DMA mode?

  6. Thanks everyone for all the valuable suggestions.

Sorry I'm really quite a novice in these things. How to determine if the burner is in DMA mode in vista?

As suggested by you I formatted a fresh disc with imgburn and attempted to burn a DVD. I get the following error message with imgburn

EDITED: I figured how to determine if the burner is running in DMA mode. The enable DMA mode box is already enabled!

    planetx,

Given just the error message, all I can tell is that ImgBurn told the drive to read the first sector, but the drive said it couldn't because the first sector was past the end of the disk. Since ImgBurn was trying to read, the error must have occured at the start of Verify, which follows writing. That would indicate that the problem is either the media or the drive.

If this disk is the same kind as was used in the log you posted earlier, try a different make of -rw, or try +rw. You could also try using a standard dvdr +/- (not rewriteable). If you can determine that it's not a media problem, the only thing left is your new drive is the problem.

  8. I'm still unable to fix the problem. I tried out all possible things. Yesterday I even uninstalled nero and tried to install a different version; tried using both Nero 8 and Nero-7.8.5.0. Latest update is that apparently the files gets burned and I even get the message "Burn process completed successfully" but when I click open to view the files on the disc I could see nothing. The disc is empty. Please help.

    planetx,

That's not surprising. That's what ImgBurn was complaining about in the error message you posted earlier.

I'll try explaining what's going on in a different way:

The software (Nero or ImgBurn) is telling the drive to write the data to the disk in a continuing conversation between the software and the drive. At each step, the software tells the drive to do something, and the drive is answering back "Okay, I'm done with that step", so the software instructs the drive to do the next step, and so on. At each step, the drive believes it was successful in accomplishing what it was told to do, because that's what the drive is telling the software. However, at the end of the burn, there isn't anything really on the disk.

That means that even though the drive was going through the motions, nothing was actually being written to the disk. There are only two reasons why that would occur:
    1) The disk is either defective, or the drive isn't able to use the disk.
    2) The drive is defective.

To rule out the possibility that the problem is #1 above, get even one Verbatim dvdr (not rewritable) disk, and try burning that. It doesn't matter whether the disk is +R or -R, just that it's Verbatim and not rewritable.

If that works, then the drive is fine, and you need to find media that works in that burner.

If it doesn't work, the drive is defective. Since it's a new drive, exchange it for a new one.
