  1. Want to do some trivial stuff: Edit some MPEG2-TS (from Digital TV) and burn it as DivX/XviD on DVDs.

Now the difficult things: I would like to do the edits at frame level, keep multiple audio tracks (i.e. MPG + AC3) and prefer to do it on the Mac.

Tried a couple of nice apps like MPEG-Streamclip, FFMPEGX, SimplemovieX, Toast 8 and others, but all fail either with frame level editing or with creating a DivX with multiple audio tracks.

Has somebody found a solution? Please share your findings.

In case you have one not for Mac but for Linux or Windows, please leave a message as well. While I prefer to do it on my Mac, I have access to a Windows/Linux machine as well. If I have the choice to do it very cumbersome (or not at all) on the Mac or very elegant on Linux or Windows, I prefer the Linux/Windows way.

The more I am involved with Macs, the more and more disappointed I am at the scarcity of decent video applications in comparison to what Windows has to offer. Especially when it comes to free software.

Virtualdubmod or AVIDemux should be able to do what you want on under Windows, including frame level edits and multiple audio tracks. Because you want to output to Xvid, which is a full re-encode, frame level editing is available under full processing mode.

This statement is 100% correct. I have a Mac at work and I work with hardcore Mac fanboys. One of the most hardcore of them all runs Windows in a virtual machine (via Parallels I think) at home because various programs that he uses just simply have no Mac equivalents and he has to run them via Windows. On Macs, you do well if you have one or two programs that can do something and if they don't work for you, you are out of luck. On Windows there is a variety of solutions for video work and if you don't like one or it doesn't seem to work for you, you can try something else. The Linux situation seems to be even worse than Macs in terms of having video and audio tools.

Thanks a lot. At least AVIDemux seems to be compiled for Max OSX as well, although somewhat using X11. I'll have a look on it.
