When I do high speed dubbing with the eh50, it's using up twice the space on a dvd. Forty minute recordings are taking up almost 90 min's on the dvd. Is it supposed to work like that?

Sounds as if your original 40 min. recording is in XP/HQ mode, 60 min. of which will fill a DVD (~2X higher bit rate than SP)
40 min. of XP/HQ = 66% of a full DVD disc, which works out to ~80 min. of DVD capacity when dubbed by any method, HS or RT.
