When my husband tries to record a blank disc on our DVD recorder/player the machine locks up. The person at the store where we purchased it said he is using the wrong discs and suggested asking which were good to use for Panasonic DMR-EZ47V. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Thanks for your suggestions/help. We have Memorex DVD-R right now which aren't working at all. I'll go to the website suggested and read any info there. Also, both of you mentioned Verbatim so shall try them. You're dealing with a 75 yr. old woman and an 83 yr. old man here, so we need help and patience!

  5. Memorex is pretty awful, this could be your problem.

The Panasonic DMR-EZ47V is pretty new and should be able to burn most any disc you put in it. That said, the quality of way too many blank media brands has plummeted so badly these last few months that even the newest recorders are rejecting some of them. guns1inger suggested TY, Verbatim and possibly TDK: the first two I would agree with but in the USA you should avoid TDK like the plague: they are the same as Memorex, they aren't "really TDK" in the US anymore (guns1inger hails from Aus, where TDK is still available in a better version).

TY is available only online, they are not in stores. Very good but not a convenient quick buy. Verbatim is available at OfficeMax and Best Buy, frequently on sale. It is another failsafe choice, a few older recorders won't burn it but it should be fine on a brand new deck like the EZ47V. Another possibility would be Sony, but only if the wrapper says "Made In Taiwan". Virtually EVERY other brand available in stores at the moment is questionable-to-junk quality. Try one of the top three above, and keep trying until you find one or two that work. The Verbatim should solve your problem, try that first.

Thanks, Orsetto, et al. Your help is much appreciated. Shall follow your suggestions and hope for the best. We can use the VCR portion okay and watch movies, etc. on disk; just can't record and read on DVD discs. So, we'll keep trying until get it right; get something that works.

  7. Though it may cost more

always use individually packed ones than the ones come

    on a spindle

If your burner is capable of buring at 16 X speed then select the

speed at 8 X or lower

The speed of burning is not as important as the quality of palyback

    on various DVD players

They regularly have Verbatim dvdr's on sale at Officemax & Best Buy for 14.99 a 50 pack & 24.99 for a 100 pack.
Saves the hassle of having to mail order anything, will have plenty of disc's on hand and you will never go wrong with Verbatim.

Ummmm.... she is talking about a "Standalone" recorder, not an internal burner.

Memorex is the biggest piece of crap media I have ever bought. Had more coasters in a 25 pack of them by far than any other brand I ever tried. At the time I had no idea about DVD media quality, so I just bought whatever I could find at Best Buy.

I'd suggest you ignore indyram's post which is just wrong about discs on spindles and also complete inapplicable to the original post, which is about using a DVD recorder, not a PC.

Lee Ann would have to mail order Taiyo Yuden and as a newbie I doubt she'll do that, so my suggestion would be to try hard to find Verbatim and if she can't find them, grudgingly look for TDK or Sony, but know that sometimes TDK and Sony use excellent manufacturers and sometimes they use crap ones. Any TDK or Sony discs made in Japan should be OK but discs made in other countries may not be very good.

    Verbatim. Avoid Made in India.

Available at Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, etc..

Avoid most store brands, Memorex (bad discs, poor support), some Sony or TDK stuff.

Read the label - Made In Japan = Good

I thought the problem with Made In India verbatims was only with the DL DVD+R disc's or only the initial startup batches ??
