    Dvix, Xvid and h.264. How do they each of them compress video files? I'm not asking how to encode with these codec, just asking how do they work.

    All codecs (not just the ones you listed above) function basically the same way. What you really want to learn is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossy_compression
