The past week I have not been able to successfully download a newsgroup archive with Newsleecher. Small stuff still works (mp3, >200 mb avi, etc.), but larger video files will not. The file transfer looks fine with no log errors during, but when I go to unzip the archive with Win rar I get CRC errors and "cyclic redundancy error" and "file is corrupt." I know that every single thing I have tried to download can not be corrupt as a coincidence, so I re-downloaded a movie I already have from the same poster and what do you know it is corrupt, proving the problem is on my end. I did a memory test on my computer and I have no bad sticks. Also, I upgraded my version of
win rar but problem still persists. I used my sfv checker on an archive and discovered several of the complete .rar's are missing the same amount of bytes after transfer leading me to believe there is an error in the transfer process even though my fios connection is solid. I download at 1.24mb/s, do you think all of the sudden my computer can't process fast enough?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

it is possible for the files on the newsserver to be all corrupt. they may have an array going bad. happens with the little ones all the time. but, try a different client and see how it goes. agent works well and has a free trial period.

I've downloaded from a different news server also, and a friend has downloaded the same exact files without a problem, though his connection is much slower.

I've always wondered, what do people download from newsgroups besides illegal rips, games, and other warez?

    Just curious.

I know that torrents are used for legit purposes, like linux distros and such, so I wouldn't think that you'd have to go so "underground" for any legit purposes.

Lastly, why are you going to a VIDEOhelp site to find a solution to a newsreader problem? There are literally hundreds of sites that deal with those problems in a more expert manner than here.

I go to usenet to talk to friends on various newsgroups. There are hundreds of text/talk groups there, not just binary groups and have been for decades...

Since "sometime before 1975" Usenet has been overinfected by
spammers, trolls, spammerslayers, trollhunters, and flame wars. IMHO, not worth frequenting
anymore. Apparently, only the anime fanaticals are imbecile enough to believe
they can be the exception to the rule

burgkev - try deleting all your headers and redownloading them all. yours may have gotten out of sync with the nsp.

Why of course, isn't it obvious ? FREE PORN -- the 1st., 2nd., and 3rd.-place mainstays of the internet !! (But unfortunately, the vast majority of this went over to commercial adverts for paysites a long time ago.)

The other thing I can think of that is outside your criteria might be things that are too controversial, such as that leaked 9 minute interview clip of Tom Cruise, intended only for internal Scientology use, which his lawyers manage to cease & desist off of almost every site that had it up.

And don't forget all of the special interest communities that use the newsgroups: name a disease or support group -- they are beyond count.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

    As above FREE PORN

Seriously though, there's a bit of armature photography, armature video, legal movies, and yes even Linux ISOs, not to mention the live musical performances that are 100% legal to distribute. Most of the musical performances are available through torrents, but it's P2P, and P2P tends to be great, then suck, then great, then suck...... If you have a decent connection and a good server you don't have to worry about how many seeders or leachers there are, just double click and download at full speed.

I also point my newsreader to gmane to read mailing lists (http://www.gmane.com/)
Linux _is_ user-friendly. It is not ignorant-friendly and idiot-friendly.
