I've got a friend who saves a lot of webpages to CDs.
He says that running an antivirus scan on the CD means that he can later run that CD on any computer, knowing its clean.
I'm wondering if that's always true...

  2. It would depend on the antivirus program used.

Not all antivirus programs are equal

Some have higher detection rate than others; and if virus definitions are not up to date, it could "miss" a new virus.

"Always" is too strong of a word

And many antivirus programs don't do well at detecting Trojans, Adware, Rootkits or other 'non-virus' malware. I would never place all my faith in just a antivirus program.

That said, AVG can scan CDs or DVDs, but video DVD scanning just takes a few seconds, so I don't know that it's really doing anything. Data DVDs do seem to be scanned properly, though. Certainly better than not checking them at all. But I scan my files before I burn them to DVD or CD.

If you tell it to or have the optical drive/s listed in with all other drives to be scanned it will.....

    What poisondeathray said,
just because you scan the cd with norton 2002 and it comes up clean, that does not mean it did not miss some killer virus made in 2006 that it can not detect....

    Never say never....... 8)
