Hello I currently own a Sony DAV-C700 DVD player. I am trying to get SPDIF working and I am using Power Dvd from an Inspiron E1505 laptop. I bought the media converter from dell, I can get video but not audio out. if somebody could point me in the right direction with some settings I would greatly appreciate it!

What version of powerdvd? I guess you have enabled spdif in powerdvd, like http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s273/nhmols/PowerDVD7_SPDIF.jpg
What does it say on your audio receiver? Does it say Dolby Digital or something or nothing?
Are you playing DVD with PowerDVD or other video sources?

Can you get surround sound audio output from a laptop? I've seen stereo output, but nothing better.
