hey...my bro just got an apartment, and he has this old tv that only has one set of composite in on the back....he's trying to make that an out, so he can output the tv's sound to speakers that are hooked up to a reciever, he said you can do it with a VCR, using it as a tuner, but his apartment is very small (and already crowded) and he does not have the room for another "device." (Plus I dont think they sell just VCR's anymore, just combos, and he cant afford one of those right now) is there anything smaller (and prefererably cheap) that could make an in port an out port, so he can get sound from the speakers??

    any help would be appreciated

Not that I ever heard of.

Does the tv have a headphone output jack? You could use that and some rca/headphone splitters to hook it up to a stereo.

The only other option is to use a vcr as was mentioned in your post. Simply put you have to have an output not an input.

Now probably some electronics wiz could take apart the tv and rig something but I wouldn't mess around with openening a tv unless you knew exactly what you were doing.

If you have to ask "how" to alter a television on an Internet forum, the the answer is "you don't".

People are dumping old TV's on Goodwill. You could probably swap for a better one.

  6. When I was a kid, I took apart my TV and soldered onto the speaker leads to make my own headphone jack on the TV. I suppose if you put an attenuator in-line you could bring it down to line level.

But it's not really advisable to go poking around inside TVs.

thanks for the info...but I think thats a little bit beyond my technical ability...If you asked me to take apart a computer, maybe...but not a tv...
plus my bro found a free VCR (his friend was trying to get rid of it) so I guess he settled for that...thanks for all your suggestions!

Hello Yoda313. i'm actually in the same type of position. however my screen is an acer h233h. unfortunately, it only has an audio in port no audio out. needless say the integrated speakers suck so i would like to use my external speakers. however using an HDMI cable (playing the ps3) i can only use the crappy integrated speakers. so it only has an audio in and you said that one could "use that and some rca/headphone splitters to hook it up to a stereo"... how would you do that please ? (i have headphone splitters)

what kind of tv service does he have? if he has cable perhaps he can get a cable box from his cable company, with satellite you've got a box, and with the digital OTA he'd have to have a converter box as well..all of these will output via RCA....and all of them should be smaller than a VCR..although saying you don't have room for something as small as a VCR is a little hard to believe.

  10. I was told by a TV tech we used for several years that there is enough charge on the tube to KILL YOU even several days after the unit is unplugged. Haven't opened up a monitor since then.

I've always used the secondary audio outputs on the cable or sat box to go to my amp and speakers.

Interesting comment on the VCR, space was NOT the issue, cost was. Not that I can't absolutely relate to this issue, it just points out that the initial answer you are given is often not the real reason.

My amp was free and I've had the speakers for 20 years, otherwise I might be trying to do the same thing.

You can use fiber optic simultaneously for audio with the hdmi.

You should also be able to use the rca audio output simultaneously with hdmi as well. Just select it from the audio settings tab. You can simultaneously output two audio outs on the ps3 - however they will be stereo only. So you can have audio through hdmi and audio through regular rca out jacks.

(I think you have to have the recent firmware upgrades for the ps3 to have the dual audio options - a fall update -don't remember the firmware number).
