When ever I try to capture video from the camcorder through Windows Movie maker,it gives the following "A video capture device was not detected.Verify that the device is turned on and connected properly and then try again."
The device is obviously turned on and in play edit mode.It is also connected properly as 'DVin' is showing in the screen of the camera. What is problem? Is movie maker corrupted in my system?
NB:I have captured movie from the same camera with Movie Maker a year back.
Please help!!

have you tried having the camera in camera mode?
sometimes i have found that in edit mode a camera wont give out the correct signal for the pc to 'see it'
in camera mode a signal is being sent and the pc may pick up on that, and then switch to edit mode. -
Moviemaker can be corrupted by other video software.
Are you using the same firewire cable and interface which worked in the past?
Incompatibility between camers and certain cables and interfaces is not uncommon. -
Check your camcorder's setup - there may be a setting for selecting DV IN vs. DV OUT. You need DV OUT.
Failing that, turn off the camcorder and disconnect it from the PC, leaving the FireWire cable connected to the PC. Reconnect the FireWire cable and turn the camcorder back on. Does the PC make a ba-bip sound? Does a little menu pop-up offering options for capturing etc? If not, the computer is not detecting the camcorder.
If this is the case, either try a different computer or borrow a friend's camcorder to see if it works.
If the ba-dip does happen then you may have other software interfering - notably stupid little "utilities" from Pinnacle, Roxio and Nero. -
Thank for your support!
The problem was with firewire card.Windows was not detecting it as it was somehow detached. Now it's alright.I am able to capture video now.“We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.” .......Swami Vivekanda -

Assuming you have XP (not Vista), you should see a new "drive" appear in My Computer called Sony DV Camcorder #1 or something similar. If you do, open it and see if you can see the video coming from the camera (make sure it is playing a tape or is in live camera mode).

No, nothing showing on "my computer", i'm running windows xp. still getting the "bing bong" noise each time i connect/remove the cable.
mystery as it worked ok last time i used it.
so how do you reset these cards? -
If the card is showing in Device Manager, uninstall it then scan for new hardware. This should reinstall the drivers.

don't see any firewall card or device in device manager, not exactly sure what im looking for, not a pc geek so go easy!
