MS FrontPage may be what you are thinking of. It's part of the MS Office suite of tools.

CoffeCup is good, and easy to use. http://www.coffeecup.com/ About $50US

The "old" program was FrontPage and I'm still using an old version of it myself from time to time but it turns out that Microsoft is no longer making FrontPage and the replacement is something called Expression. Here is a link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/Expression/products/overview.aspx?key=web

I haven't used it myself nor do I know much about it.

NVU might offer a decent open source alternative:

What are good programs to build websites?

    1) A decent text editor(NOT a word processor!) such as TextPad;

    2) An unlocked brain;

Use to use a microsoft program back in 2001 but cant remember what it is called. And cant tell by the newer versions.
FrontPage and older versions of M$ WinWord are notorious for adding an absurdly-huge
quantity of garbage to the HTML code. Word 97 was able to wrap 300kB of plain-text
in 600kB of junk --- resulting filesize = 900kB. Sadly most people do not give a damn
about these completely-"irrelevant" details. Just my US$ 1.99 for this day.

Coffee cup has free version here: http://www.coffeecup.com/free-editor/

I have the pay for version and to tell you the truth the only thing I could find different between the pay for and free version is the free version adds a text link for coffeecup to new html documents when you them. There is no indication as far as I can see that you need to keep this link which can be edited out by simply opening it again, I didn't fully read the TOS for the free version so I could be wrong about that.

I use a program called Webplus from Serif. It's pretty easy to use. All WYSIWYG and such. It's about 50 bucks as well. I had priced Web Expressions from MS. It was about 300 dollars.

I sometimes use Linux as well as WinXP Pro and I recently found a Linux program called "KompoZer" that appears to be a WYSIWYG FrontPage style HTML editor.

I just downloaded it and fired it up just once to "check it out" but haven't really used it yet ... just thought I'd mention it. Being Linux it is free of course

As for the other stuff mentioned ... I do remember using CoffeeCup once eons ago and being most impressed with it at that time and I'm sure it has come a far way since so for WinXP or Vista I would definitely give it a look see. I might even give it a try again myself.

For someone wanting to give Linux a try I highly suggest Linux Mint 4.0 aka Daryna as being one of the most user friendly versions of Linux I have had the pleasure to play with. Check out DISTROWATCH.COM for a list of different versions of Linux complete with reviews and download links etc.

My only problem with Linux as a desktop replacement to WinXP or even Vista is that Linux currently lacks some of the more refined video tools that I have come to use under WinXP ... otherwise I totally love Linux and use it more often these days than WinXP except of course when doing (most) video projects.

KompoZer (http://www.kompozer.net/ ) is actually derived from NVU, which has reportedly stopped development (though the NVU developers apparently have a replacement editor project in progress, of which I can't remember the name. ) They (KompoZer) have Windows, Mac and Linux builds... I have the latest Windows build installed on the Win98 system I'm using at this very moment.

Thank you for the clarification as I had thought that KompoZer was a Linux only program. Opps

I did a little checking; the 'replacement' for NVU is apparently called 'Composer.' (Which might be a little confusing, since NVU/KompoZer technically have their roots in Netscape/Mozilla's Composer from the full suite apps.)

Here's something the NVU dev says about all three in his blog:
I keep receiving a lot of emails/questions about Nvu and its descendants. So here are a few answers :

    * yes, I know that Nvu was impossible to download from nvu.com. I pinged Linspire and they updated the page.
    Everything should be ok now.
    * no, I have no more relationship with Linspire about Nvu.
    * yes, the name Nvu and its logo are protected.
    * no, I'm not helping on Kompozer and yes, I dropped Nvu entirely.
    * no, Composer is not dead at all, it's only evolving slowly because I'm working on it on my spare time.
    * no, I don't think Kompozer is going to live a long time. Kompozer is only a chrome bug-fix of Nvu and it's still based on the Mozilla 1.7 codebase. It's obsolete. Compared to Composer, Nvu and Kompozer will look like dinosaurs
    * yes, Composer will be MPL.
    * yes, Composer's code is only minimally based on Nvu's.
    * no, Composer is only a code name. The final name is not chosen yet.

Is Composer available for download yet and if so from where?

Sounds like it is vaporware as of now ... at least from what I read in that blog i.e., the comments.

As far as I can tell, it isn't. There does seem to be a CVS directory of sorts (the 'Checkins' link under the Composer heading on the left-side menu of the blog), but I'm not sure how ready it is. The 'Progress' link doesn't even exist. :/

I'm fine with KompoZer for now, anyway. (Well, okay, that and the text-editor method. ) I'm not sure KompoZer's as obsolete as the NVU dev implies, either... sure, Mozilla's past 1.8 now (>Seamonkey), but I don't think the Composer codebase has changed that much.

I can't speak for how well the WYSIWYG editor in Coffecup works because I never really used it , as far as text editing goes it works great. I use it for everything, HTML, PHP, CSS...
