I have 21 DVD's (some with only a few mins on) of video my late father captured of my children (originally on VHS)and I would like to copy it into some sort of order. I have bought an easy editing programme and cannot really come to grips with it. I do not want to take this up as a hobby, just do this one project.

Can anyone suggest some software based on cut and paste (I can do that) so I can cut each scene, save seperately and then "paste" them into the order (or drag and drop and I can do that too..) I want before I burn them. I'm just about to give up so any help would be very much appreciated. It sonds so simple in my head...... (which is obviously not programmed to edit videos) but seems so difficult in practice.

Womble Video Wizard is pretty simple, and designed to work with mpeg video of the type you have on your discs. It has the advantage that is doesn't re-encode the video if it doesn't need to, so it is quick, and doesn't reduce quality.

  3. Windows Movie Maker comes with Windows XP. It is free and simple. If you can't find it, type in windows movie maker in google.

Thanks you so much for your replies. I have downloaded a trial of Womble video and it does have an area where you can cut and add clips for future insertion into other compilations which is exactly what I want to do. Just got to work out how to do it now. Studying the Pdf instructions but it might as well be in Chineese.Again many thanks

    Use VideoRedo for quick results.

Again many thanks. I have looked at Videredo and you are right, it looks really simple. I am begining to think that it is not actually the software but my own total inability to work out how to cut these videos into sections to save so I can make new ones.

Am not giving up just yet but am not far off, maybe editing is just not for the uninitiated.

I second that recommendation - I have used it myself to do the kind of thing you want to do. I've never used VideoRedo, but it sounds like it will fit the bill too - so I guess it's a case of which one you get to grips with the easiset.

Ignore Windows Movie Maker - it doesn't output to the right format you'd need to retain quality.

    Good luck with your project.

VideoRedo is like virtualdub. Great for quick cuts and basic assemble editing. Womble has a more conventional timeline model and is closer to an NLE, with basic titling etc as well. Both are great at what they do, and both have other handy functions.
