Hi8 transfer from Sony CCD-TRV608 to PC streaming for DVD **Problem

I have a small business converting video media to DVD from tape and film. I've done everything but Hi8 up until this last two weeks. Seems I got 2 pretty large jobs and the customers both want Hi8 to DVD. I have a Sony CCD-TRV608 with USB streaming capability. I am using Pinnacles Studio 11 and have tried Sony Vegas 8 and Nero 8 Premium all with the same outcome......A choppy mess. I definitely need IEEE 1394 transfer, as this camcorder will not do the job for me.

Is there anything else I can purchase for a decent price "Today", ie other camcorder, player with IEEE 1394 transfer ? I have to have these jobs done by next Tuesday.

Your profile does not indicate weather you have a capture card in your PC. Do you? if not, I would get one.
connect the A/V cable that came with your camcorder from the outout connector on your camcorder to the input connectors of the capture card. I would than try to capture with your current software using 'composite' mode.

Hi, thank you for your response. I do have both a capture and a complete media transfer set with RCA and S-Video. But I can't find any output connections on the camera. Only the USB.

Rather than a camera, I'd pick up a converter device like the Datavideo DAC-100 which takes your s-video output, converts to DV, and inputs to the computer thru firewire.
Since you're in the biz, you'll be using it frequently.
Other similar devices include the Canopus and ADS...I think
I believe some devices are available at retailers like Circuit City, Best Buy, Frys, perhaps Walmart...etc.

I have pinnacle movie box deluxe which supports input RCA and SVideo. but I didn't see the outputs on the camera? Are you familiar with this camera? I only bought it for the transfer, that's it. I don't use it otherwise.

See page 32 of the owners manual - it shows the location of the output jacks on the camera and explains how to hook-up to TV etc.

This is your answer. Buy either of these Digital8 decks today. Both play Hi8 to IEEE-1394 DV including PCM audio tracks if present. They will still have high resale value when you finish.

If all you need is a straight dub, get a quality Hi8 player or camcorder with built in TBC and feed to a quality DVD recorder.

Many Digital8 camcorders play Hi8 tapes but none of the current models in stores. You will need to buy used. Check specs for Hi8 playback. You could still get the GV-Dx00 decks above FedEx by this Wednesday.

Out of curiosity, have you considered going directly from the camcorder to a standalone DVD recorder? If you clients just want the contents of the tape dumped to DVD without editing etc., it seems unnecessary to go the PC route. This will free up your PC to do other clients' jobs.

he just bought the camera so another $500 to run off some hi8 would be a considerable investment

I've been thinking about igotregister's dilemma and 2Bdecided's comment. I can't help but thinking of some guy's computer in the bedroom, clothes laying all around, hi8 tapes and disks scattered everywhere, hardware and software manuals open, the dog knocking over the DVD cake of disks, cheap hi8 tapes stuck in the camcorder, and the cat barfing in the dvd tray.

They are available elsewhere. Use Google. That deck will also get the job done and can be resold after. As said, a simple dub requires only a DVD recorder but if editing and/or authoring is required, the DV route is most reliable.
