  1. Hi, I recorded a few songs from a recent concert I went to on my digital camera. The picture quality is great but the sound is distorted in places due to the bass and makes a fuzzing noise.

Is there any program where I can play the video and edit the channels to reduce this?

    Thanks

  2. You can remove the bass but the distortion will still be there.

You could extract the audio and use a audio editor. But you may not be able to eliminate the distortion.

What format is the video? I use VirtualDub Mod for that most times, extract the audio to a WAV, process it in the freeware audio editor Audacity, then add it back with the video. One guide for extracting the audio: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic280779.html

When you add the audio back in, delete the original audio and save both the audio and video in 'Direct stream mode'. VD Mod should be able to read the common MJPEG video from still cameras or DV from a camcorder. (You may want to add a DV codec like the Panasonic DV Codec for that.)

Audacity has quite a few filters available, so it may be able to make some improvements.

With live music and a camera with a built in microphone, I have used a fabric band-aid (plaster) to cover over the microphone hole to reduce the bass and distortion. A cheap fix, but it often works.

You can search for audio plugs that 'declip'. A quick google search found a few. I know that Cool Edit Pro has a built in 'declip' plugin, that does a decent job. It will restore the natural curve of your wave, but in my experience, doesn't completely get rid of the crackling/distortion of the overdriven bass. You can try the demo here, as hear for yourself if it's worth it:

  6. Have you any idea which filters to use on audacity to lower the bass?

I have used it before to lower the high peaks but can't find it now!

Its as if I want to remove the darker peaks which seem to be causing the bass/fuzz noise.

    Cheers

yep...I had to do the exact opposite and add bass when the electronic windscreen in my cam cut it out.

  9. I still can't make the files any better

Can anybody try and have a play with the files if they get time?

    Thanks

  10. Those samples are so overmodulated no filtering will be able to fix them.

I agree with jagabo. You needed to turn down the record volume when you recorded it. That is what you have at best and nothing can really be done to it to make it acceptable to you, realistically. One of the pitfalls of consumer camcorders with no control over their levels and being too close to the source.
